‘The most beautiful theatre in London’  The Guardian

Built in 1901 the Hackney Empire is a magnificent Edwardian theatre which has been providing quality entertainment for 110 years.  Designed by Frank Matcham, the leading theatre architect of the day, the theatre was the technological wonder of its time.   Charlie Chaplin, Marie Lloyd, Stan Laurel and Maria Callas are amongst the acts who have performed at the Empire.

In 2001, the Empire’s centenary year, the theatre embarked upon a £15 million restoration.   In January 2004 the theatre reopened with a new 60 seat orchestra pit, brand new backstage area and improved public access to all levels of the auditorium.

In 2012 Empire 2@The Bullion Rooms was opened.   Located to the rear of the theatre this modern complex provides meeting rooms and a large creative space adaptable for a variety of uses.

Each year, the Hackney Empire welcomes over 100,000 people to a wide variety of performance, including its world-renowned pantomime, and participatory activity for the local community and young people.
