Dr Johnson’s House can be described as a shrine to the English language, for it was here that Johnson worked to compile the first comprehensive English Dictionary, published in 1755. Built in 1700, the House was both a home and workplace for Johnson from 1748-1759, and many of his famous circle of friends would have visited him here including Sir Joshua Reynolds, Charles Burney, Oliver Goldsmith and David Garrick. The House is one of the few residential houses of its age still surviving in the City of London and has been restored to its original condition. It contains a fine collection of period furniture, prints and portraits and boasts a wealth of original features including panelled walls and an open staircase. Dr Johnson’s House is the perfect setting for holding functions of up to 100 people. It is situated in a delightful square just north of Fleet Street (Gough Square), and because the City, in the evening, is sparsely populated, affords ample parking space in the adjoining streets.
